“Smile Power Day” is every June, and we have some good news to share with you about how smiling can positively influence your mental health, reduce stress, and build confidence.

All that from just a smile? Yes, and much more!

First, what is Smile Power Day? According to Holidays Calendar, Smile Power Day is observed each year on June 15th in the United States and is a time in which people can empower their lives and others’ through smiling. A smile leaves a lasting impression on people, helps to boost their impression of you and your interactions with them, and often improves your mood.

Researchers have demonstrated evidence behind these claims. A study that was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and published in Scientific Reports (2018) found that different types of smiles have different effects. For example, smiles that demonstrate a person’s happiness or that aide in building social relationships help to reduce stress, thereby elevating one’s mental state. When we reap the benefits of smiling, we can expect our confidence to be improved, as well.

Beyond the study mentioned above and other research behind the benefits of smiling, we know from experience that smiling is infectious. Have you ever traveled before? Of course, you have, and you were likely greeted with smiles from the many people you interacted with, thereby triggering you to smile. We see this cause-and-effect relationship every day in our own office when patients arrive at their appointments.

Unfortunately, not everyone feels confident about their smile. However, Dr. Josh Smith and his team are here to help you if you ever wish to address a part of your smile. Give us a call to learn more.
