Have you been thinking about Botox?
While many people believe BOTOX® is only an approach used by some people to side-step father time, it’s also commonly used for various medical reasons. While November 16th is celebrated as National BOTOX® Day, throughout November, we also recognize a health issue many people suffer from that can be treated with BOTOX®: TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.
There are many aesthetic reasons individuals use BOTOX®, but most wish to smooth out wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging. Crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes) and forehead lines are popular areas individuals get treated.
How does it work?
BOTOX® uses “a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. This toxin is produced by the microbe that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning” (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Treatments are provided over a series of relatively pain-free injections over short periods of time, though continued injections are often needed to achieve continuous desired outcomes.
Beyond the aesthetic benefits behind BOTOX®, the treatment can also be used for neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladders, lazy eye, and TMJ, as mentioned earlier (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Individuals suffering from TMJ know how painful and disruptive the disorder can be, but many are unaware of the relief BOTOX® may be able to provide.
